Does Cyprus count toward the Schengen 90 days?

Cyprus is in the EU and working toward Schengen, so it's easy to assume it shares the count. As of September 2026 it doesn't. Here's how the two limits work side by side.

No. As of September 2026, days in Cyprus don't count toward your Schengen 90 days. Cyprus is in the EU but not yet in the Schengen area. It has its own short-stay limit instead, and MyTravelStatus counts that for you as a second, separate figure. The two never mix.

Why Cyprus doesn't count

The European Commission's page on the Schengen area says that Cyprus takes part in Schengen cooperation, but that the EU Council has not yet abolished controls at its internal borders. Until it does, Cyprus is outside the area for the 90/180 rule.

The UK government's travel advice spells out both halves. Visits to Cyprus don't count toward your 90-day limit in the Schengen area, and visits to Schengen countries don't count toward your limit in Cyprus. So a week in Cyprus neither uses your Schengen days nor is used up by them.

Cyprus's own limit

Many visitors don't need a visa for Cyprus. UK advice says British visitors can stay up to 90 days without one, and points to the Cyprus High Commission for staying longer than 90 days in a 180-day period. We count Cyprus the same way as Schengen: 90 days in any rolling 180, arrival and departure days in full, with a Cypriot residence permit or long-stay visa taking those days out. Our reading of the Cyprus rule comes from secondary sources, so check it with the Cypriot authorities before you rely on it.

How you get there, and the checks you meet

  • Cyprus is an island, so you arrive by air or sea. From a Schengen country that means a real border on both sides: you leave the Schengen area at passport control, and you enter Cyprus at its own.
  • Cyprus doesn't run the Entry/Exit System, the UK advice says. Your exit from the Schengen area should be recorded in the EES when you leave, for example at Athens airport. In Cyprus itself, get your passport stamped on entry and exit.
  • Enter the island through the Republic of Cyprus. Canadian and UK advice warn that entering through the north can be treated as illegal entry. Crossing the Green Line inside the island is allowed at designated crossing points.

What you see in MyTravelStatus

  • Status page: once you have a Cyprus trip, a second figure appears under your Schengen count: Cyprus days used of 90, with the days left in the Cyprus window, or a leave-by date if you're there today.
  • Trips page: a Cyprus trip is labeled "Outside Schengen", because it adds nothing to the Schengen figure.
  • PDF report (Plus and Pro): Cyprus gets its own section, with its own window, whenever you have Cyprus trips.
  • Free calculator: Cyprus days are left out of the Schengen count. It doesn't show the separate Cyprus figure; an account does.

A worked example

Worked exampleGreece, then Cyprus, then back to Greece
  1. You're in Greece from 1 to 30 April 2026 and fly from Athens to Larnaca on 30 April.
  2. You stay in Cyprus until 20 May, then fly back to Athens and stay in Greece until 31 May.
  3. You enter three trips: Greece 1 to 30 April, Cyprus 30 April to 20 May, Greece 20 to 31 May.
  4. Schengen: 30 days in April and 12 days in May, so 42 days used on 31 May.
  5. Cyprus: 30 April to 20 May is 21 days, all in the Cyprus count, so 69 days left in the Cyprus window.

42 Schengen days and 21 Cyprus days on 31 May. 30 April and 20 May appear in both counts, because on each you were in Greece and in Cyprus for part of the day, and each limit counts any part of a day as a whole day.

Enter the flight days on both trips, as above. If the Greek trip ended on 29 April, the Schengen figure would be a day short.
